Straphanger is moving to a new platform—you can find it here.

I'll be sharing bulletins from my life and travels as a straphanger, bicycle rider, and all-around avoider of automobiles.

I’m the author of eight non-fiction books, among them Straphanger: Saving Our Cities and Ourselves from the Automobile, which took me to 14 cities around the world looking at the best, and worst, in urban and inter-urban transportation.

I’ve got strong opinions, but also the data and experiences to back them up.

I also love food, and am obsessed with gastronomic culture and history, which is why I’ve launched another Substack, The Lost Supper. A book of the same name, my eighth, will be published by Greystone in September 2023.

My writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, Food & Wine, Condé Nast Traveller, Gourmet, Afar, The Times of London, The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, National Geographic, The Smithsonian, and many others.

You can subscribe for free, but please consider making a contribution ($7 a month, or $70 for a year). Paid subscribers will get far more content, and will help cover the bus and train fare I’ll need to keep this Substack rolling.
